Social Responsibility

At Bimbo Bakeries USA, we follow the Social Responsibility Program set by our parent company, Grupo Bimbo, designed around activities that address the challenges in which society is currently immersed.

We center our efforts on four programs:

Committed to your Health
Committed to the Environment
Committed to our Associates
Committed to our Community

Committed to your Health

Our company has always been keen on fostering the adoption of a healthy life style, which includes a well balanced diet as well as frequent physical activity. Through our "Committed to Your Health" program we have undertaken action in four specific areas:Committed to Health

  • Healthy Products
  • Promotion of Physical Activity
  • Nutritional Education
  • Alliances and Research

As part of our ongoing commitment to offer a healthier mix of products that cater to the different needs of our consumers, we recently inaugurated an Innovation and Nutrition Institute in Fort Worth, Texas. This facility is enabling us to focus on the development of innovative new products and to improve on existing favorites.

Current initiatives under implementation include producing only 0g trans fat products and we are developing products with less sodium. We have also been introducing new products with added benefits such as prebiotic breads; products with extra fiber, products with phytosterols for cholesterol reduction, as well as products containing Omega 3 for cardiovascular health. We have also been introducing products with less than 100 calories per serving.

Further, we are promoting an active lifestyle. Since 2004, we have been the official bread supplier of the U.S. Olympic team, proudly providing Oroweat bread products to the U.S. Olympic Training Centers in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Chula Vista, California. We have also sponsored several athletes, supporting their unwavering dedication to achievement. The 2008 athletes included gold medalists Shawn Johnson, Aaron Peirsol and Brendan Hansen. We are looking ahead to continuing to support the U.S. Olympic Team in Vancouver (2010) and London (2012).

In addition, our Bimbo brand is well known as a sponsor of several Mexican Soccer League teams, which have a strong group of followers right here in the U.S. It also promotes exercise and sportsmanship through its Futbolito Bimbo soccer tournament for kids. The Oroweat brand has presented academic scholarships to deserving athletes. Our Marinela brand has partnered with Zumba® Fitness, a fitness program popular among U.S. Hispanic consumers, to educate school children about the benefits of a healthy diet and consistent physical exercise in a fun way.

Pertaining to the advancement of academic research in grains and human nutrition, we promote this through the Pan American Nutrition award, which is granted every two years to deserving scholars. This award was established in 2004 with the single theme of Human Nutrition and Food Science and Technology.

Committed to the Environment

Our concern for the environment is genuine and we believe that we can all do our part to heal our planet so that present and future generations may come to enjoy it as well. Our goal is to be a company that stands out for its care of the environment through a rational use of natural resources by implementing efficient and profitable technologies. We are also helping to develop an environmental culture among our personnel, customers, suppliers and society.

Committed to Environment

Our commitment with the environment revolves around five
key areas:

  • Power and energy savings
  • Reduction of air emissions
  • Water savings
  • Integrated waste management systems
  • Environmental stewardship

For each one of these areas we have set specific annual objectives. We have a dedicated team of environmental specialists, which is working to improve our carbon footprint. For example, we are currently testing the use of Hybrid trucks in our fleet. Our first was tested in Southern California with much success in 2008. Since then, we have added two more units, one in Oregon and one in Colorado.

Committed to our Associates

Our associates are at the heart our company. They are key to our success. In fact, some of our associates have been working for the company for over 40 years. We appreciate their everyday contributions and are committed to helping them reach their full potential by offering a healthy and safe work environment in which the Person is at the center of our Values.Committed to Associates

We make our best efforts to offer development opportunities for associates who demonstrate a commitment to service to our Customers, our Consumers, their peers and the community. Some of these opportunities include a tuition reimbursement program for associates wishing to complete their bachelor’s degree or pursue their graduate studies; on-the-job training; in-house seminars and internal promotions to allow our people to grow with our business.

In addition, and as part of an effort to encourage their families’ well being and academic advancement, we offer scholarships on an annual basis to children and grandchildren of our associates who are college-bound high school seniors and have a proven track record of academic achievement and involvement in the community.

Committed to our Community

Committed to SocietyIn addition to our constant focus on improving internal operations, we also contribute to the general well being of our society. We want to contribute by being responsible corporate citizens and by sponsoring programs that benefit children, education, nutrition and the environment.

We are also proud sponsors of the Jr. Olympic Skills program and the U.S. Paralympic Team – both programs of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), because they both encourage and teach good nutrition and good values to their athletes. As Bimbo Bakeries USA continues its growth as a company, we continue to be dedicated to accepting the social challenges as opportunities to improve our practices, products and our world as well.
